Wayfinding

A comprehensive design for Auckland Airport, introducing a wayfinding system for the airport. The design focused on navigation, improving passenger orientation, and creating a consistent visual language across the airport environment.

The project began with the first complete review of the airport’s existing signage, supported by site audits and international best-practice research. Full-scale prototypes were developed, positioned, and tested in context to validate visibility, legibility, and spatial integration.

The design stripped away unnecessary colour and visual complexity in favour of a bold, monochromatic system. Drawing inspiration from the monoliths of 2001: A Space Odyssey, modular architectural forms were paired with clean sans-serif typography, a refined icon system, and a clear information hierarchy.

The result was a distinctive, scalable wayfinding system built around interchangeable components, balancing architectural presence with functional clarity and creating a cohesive passenger experience across airport touchpoints.
